LUNA LLENA SOBRE LA FRONTERA
FULL MOON OVER THE BORDER

La luna no reconoce fronteras;
brinca las barrancas,
vadea los ríos y arrastra mareas
por dondequiera que encuentre agua.
Los montes no la detienen
ni mucho menos los muros;
los alambres de púas
no le desgarran sus enaguas blancas
y su luz baña a los perros
lo mismo que a las patrullas.
La luna no reconoce fronteras.
The moon does not know borders;
she jumps canyons,
wades rivers & drags tides
wherever she finds water.
The mountains do not detain her,
much less the walls;
the barbed wires
do not tatter her white skirts
& her light bathes the dogs
the same as it does the patrols.

Nacido en la frontera entre México y los EE.UU., Cd. Juárez, Chihuahua y El Paso, Tejas, con familia en ambos lados del Río Bravo me crie bilingüe con dos musas, una de habla hispana, otro de habla inglesa. Consecuentemente casi todo mi trabajo es en dos lenguas compuesto simultáneamente en español e inglés ninguna versión traducción de la otra. Si una de mis musas me bendice con una imagen, una frase, un verso, la otra inmediatamente interviene dándome la versión en la otra lengua obligándome a compararlas. Afectuosas hermanas, sus cordiales alegatos deciden mis metáforas, tiempos, sintaxis. El resultado es una sola pieza en dos lenguas.
Born on the border between the U.S. and Mexico, Cd. Juárez, Chihuahua and El Paso, Texas with family on both sides of the Rio Grande, I grew up bilingual with two muses, one Spanish speaking, the other English-speaking. Consequently almost all my work is in two tongues composed simultaneously in Spanish and English, neither version translation of the other. If one muse blesses me with an image, a phrase, a verse, the other immediately intervenes giving me the version in the other tongue forcing me to compare them. Fond sisters, their cordial discussions determine my metaphors, tenses, syntax. The result is a single piece in two tongues.
